At Quanz Advanced Auto Body, April may just be our favorite month…and not just because the Isotopes are back on the field. April is Car Care Month, and it’s nice to have a month dedicated to what we’re dedicated to…and there are so many ways to observe.
Counting the Ways to Care for Your Car
Comprehensive “car care” includes maintaining your car’s mechanical health and outward appearance. Some car care you can do yourself; some may require professional help, but no matter who’s doing the work, here’s what needs to be done:
1. Regularly Scheduled Maintenance
For peak performance and long powertrain lifetime, your car needs regular:
- Oil changes
- Oil filter changes
- Air filter changes (that’s for your cabin air filter and your engine’s air intake filter)
- Belt changes
- Spark plug changes
- Tire rotation
- Tire alignment
- Tire balancing
And a host of other functional parts that need to be checked, replaced or repaired. Your owner’s manual outlines many of them, but you can always contact us to ask about the what and when of scheduled maintenance for your make and model.
2. Car Cleanliness
When you have right music (and infotainment system), and pleasant scent, your car cabin can be a place of zen where you can escape the craziness of work and home…but only if it’s clean. Sometimes cleaning your car simply means finally recycling all the plastic soda bottles you’ve thrown over your right shoulder into the back seat. Sometimes, it takes a little bit more elbow grease, particularly if you’ve got backseaters that have found all the nooks and crannies to stuff their unwanted crackers.
Exterior car cleanliness entails regularly removing debris (e.g. bird droppings, road grime, sap) and protecting metal exposed from paint chips, cracks or peels from corrosion.
A well-kept car is a car that retains its (resale) value. But, if you don’t have the time, energy and/or motivation to tackle this job yourself, Quanz has a detailing department that will be happy to do it for you.
3. Paint Job Sun Protection
In New Mexico, cars can get sunburned, too. The white scaling, usually on the roof and hood (often close to the windshield), is evidence of a sun damaged paint job. You can protect your paint job from UV radiation by regularly removing debris (i.e. washing your car) and applying wax. (More about what wax and how often in a couple weeks…)
4. Auto Theft Prevention
If you’ve spent so much time maintaining the performance and appearance of your car, you might as well keep it safe and sound so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. Theft prevention often requires nothing more than commonsense—locking your car doors, parking in a garage or car port, keeping valuable out of sight and keys inaccessible. But for tougher neighborhoods, other devices and/or alarm systems may provide the extra security you need to know that your ride will be there in the morning.
Already you can see that “car care” encompasses a lot. At Quanz Advanced Auto Body, we have a maintenance garage and an auto body/collision repair garage, and even we don’t do everything that “car care” includes because some car care has to come from you. Like:
5. Defensive Driving
You don’t have to drive like a granny to drive safely, but you do have to be cool behind the wheel. Driving defensively does mean giving up the “I’ll show him…” fist-shaking attitude so that you can prevent and become immune to road rage.
6. Attentive Driving
If you’re not giving the road your full attention, you’re not caring for your car, yourself or others on the road. No matter what it is or how miniscule the time it takes your eyes off the road, it needs to be put out of sight, out of mind, or you need to pull over.
Count On Us
Comprehensive car care does take a lot of work, but you don’t have to do it all now, and you don’t have to do it all alone. Like we said before, we’re dedicated to car care—it’s in our name. So celebrate Car Care Month by delegating your regularly scheduled maintenance and/or detailing work to Quanz Advanced Auto Body!
