Motor oil ensures that the moving parts of the car engine receive the lubrication needed to keep running without wearing each other down in the process. It is also responsible for removing impurities that build up, turning into sludge, which is an engine disaster waiting to happen.
Oil needs to be changed on a regular basis to extend the usefulness of your engine as much as possible. But some of us don’t have oil change reminder lights in our vehicles. Here are some signs that it’s time to change your oil.
Oil Change Giveaways
Figuring out when to change the oil is easier said than done, though here are some of the signs:
- An oil change is recommended every 7,500 miles. However, this recommendation may change based on the car owner’s driving patterns, the model of the car, and the type of motor oil used. Someone who uses their car more should have the oil changed more since the engine is working harder.
- You can also check the color of the oil. Fresh oil is nearly clear and is a color that ranges somewhere between amber and the lighter shades of brown. In contrast, oil that needs to be changed tends to be both darker and murkier because of the impurities floating in it. Since oil saturated with impurities has a harder time removing more impurities, this dark color is a sure sign that it needs to be changed.
- Likewise, make sure to check the level of oil by checking the dipstick (ideal oil level should be marked on the stick). You can do this at a gas station or your own home. If it is constantly and consistently lower than what it should be, then that could be a sign that the oil needs to be changed.
Bear in mind that none of these signs are sure indications that the oil needs to be changed. However, the more signs you see, the greater the chances that a change is needed.
