Why Fix it, it’s Only a Scratch!

You’ve got damage to your bumper. It’s small but noticeable, so you’re considering not having it fixed. It’s not very noticeable, but you’re trying to decide if it is worth your time to take it to the body shop, get the estimate and then drive around a rental while your car is being fixed.

The short answer is yes. It is always a good thing to have your car repaired, no matter how minor the damage may seem.

What you may not realize is the scratch could be deeper than you previously realized, making your bumper certain to start cracking almost immediately. A scratch in your paint might allow deterioration of the metal to begin. The paint on your vehicle isn’t just to make it look good. It’s a highly protective element to keep corrosion away from the components underneath.

Another reason to have the damage repaired is that you may not be able to see all that has been damaged. The material used to make cars today is highly flexible, which may go back into place after a collision and could look like nothing is damaged when underneath there could be major damage to the structure of the vehicle. There are also crumple zones engineered into the body. Damage to these areas could partially compromise the occupant’s safety without any obvious indicator of the issue from looking at the outside of the vehicle.

Any sort of damage to your vehicle is worth getting checked out. You would be wise to get a couple different estimates and then take those to your insurance company in order to commence the repair process. You want your vehicle to keep you safe, but in order to do so, you need to be aware of the maintenance that could be required after a collision.
