Driving around in your car is great until you hear that loud smack. You take a quick look to check out if there is any damage to your windshield. You see that there’s a chip or crack in the glass. You aren’t sure how significant the damage is until you pull over. When you have a crack or chip in your car glass, you should know that:
- The crack or chip can cause additional damage. Cracks can, and usually will, spread. Chips can do the same. The only way to stop the damage from getting worse is to have the crack or chip repaired as quickly as possible. Sometimes, even leaving your windshield with a crack overnight in cold temperatures can allow the damage to spread. Then, instead of worrying about the damage, you’re worrying about having to replace the entire windshield.
- Dirt can find its way into the crack. Once the dirt finds its way into the crack, there’s no getting it out. Instead of just having a crack, you have to deal with not being able to see clearly through the area that has the chip or crack (even more difficulty than you were already having, probably). This can cause discoloration in the crack and surrounding glass. You’ll end up having to replace your windshield instead of repairing it.
- Not all chips and cracks can be fixed. The sooner you have the damage repaired, the less damage there will be. However, there are still some chips and cracks that will never be able to be repaired. A glass technician can let you know for certain if the damage will require a replacement.
- You cannot fix long cracks. Any windshield crack longer than a dollar bill will most likely call for a replacement window. Once again, if you can get the damage repaired before the crack spreads, or gets deeper, you might have a chance at having the damage repaired.
