When “You Can Trust Us” Rings True

You’ve probably heard the horror stories:

A friend goes in for a routine oil change, and her mechanic calls her hours later telling her she needs additional services that are going to run an extra $300, or

A coworker had a minor fender bender, takes his car to a garage suggested by someone in his Fantasy Football League, and they discover underlying alignment damage that your insurance adjuster didn’t…and won’t cover.

So how do you find a mechanic or auto body shop you can trust?

The Internet is an amazing resource for locating businesses, including mechanics and auto body repair shops close to work or home. But don’t trust your car to the first business that pops up. Dig a little deeper—

  • How long have they been in business?
  • Are they members of the local BBB?
  • Have they been recognized by professional organizations?

Reading online reviews may also provide you with some valuable information, but it is important to note that people are more likely to publicize negative feedback. So, when you read negative reviews, don’t automatically conclude that the shop is untrustworthy. Take into consideration the total number of reviews and the ratio of positive to negative reviews.

Ask Your Friends

Feedback about a mechanic or auto body shop from a stranger via online review seems trustworthy—what do they have to gain or lose by posting their feedback, right? But the “review” may be even more valuable when it comes from someone we know, someone we can ask more questions. So, when you need to find a trustworthy garage, ask your friends and family who they trust.

Ask Questions

When you do finally decide on a mechanic or auto body repair shop, you do still have control over the repairs that are made. If you don’t understand what repairs or service they are suggesting, ask. If you don’t understand why they suggest the repairs or service they do, ask. A trustworthy mechanic or body shop will take the time to explain what needs to be done and why. If they don’t or can’t, that’s a sign that you may need to keep looking.

Trust Your Instincts

When it comes down to it, it’s your car. If you just don’t feel like it’s in good hands, then trust your instincts and keep looking for a garage you feel comfortable with.
